3. Remove Antagonistic Voices
Satan is the original antagonist and his goal is to fill our world with the story of “us versus them.” But Jesus came to unwind our antagonisms and transform the story of “us versus them” into the story of “us for them.” Much media amplifies our antagonisms and tempts us to take delight in having certain enemies, in self-righteously telling ourselves “they” are the problem and “we” are the solution. Constantly consuming this antagonism is terrible for our spiritual health, so try to rid your media diet of antagonistic, “us versus them” voices, and replace them with firm but fair and charitable voices. Similarly, when you post something, consider whether you’re unnecessarily stoking antagonisms.
Examples of Media that Feeds Antagonism
•News as Entertainment
Many news channels are structured to be entertainment rather than journalism
•Short-Form Journalism
Most times a short piece is not able to capture the nuance of the story
•Social Media
While social media can be force of connection, majority of the time it feeds our echo chambers and lead to unproductive banter
•Memes & Satire
We all need to laugh more, but satire news and memes can quickly spread false information and reveal one’s own biases. Laughing at someone does not express love or a willingness to listen.
